Coach Samuel G. Puryear, JR.
Director of Golf at Howard University; Author: Diamonds in the Rough
Samuel G. Puryear, Jr., a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a 1992 honor graduate of Tennessee State University, where he was a collegiate golfer and team captain under legendary coach Dr. Catana Starks, the first woman to coach a men’s Division I golf team. A collegiate golf coach with more than 18 years of experience, Puryear has coached at Stanford University, Michigan State University, Queens University of Charlotte, and Howard University. In 2008, he became the first African American head golf coach at a Power Five Conference university when he was named head coach at Michigan State. His coaching career includes one NCAA National Championship, two HBCU Minority National Championships, one Big Ten Championship, multiple conference championships, more than 10 Coach of the Year honors, and more than 10 NCAA Regional appearances. More than 15 of his former players have competed in PGA Tour events, including a Masters participant and a PGA Tour winner.
Beyond coaching, Puryear has dedicated his career to developing young people through education, mentorship, professional growth, junior golf clinics, camps, and corporate golf programs. His leadership and advocacy for diversity in golf have earned national media recognition, with features and appearances on ESPN, CNN, CBS, ABC, Disney Channel, FOX, Big Ten Network, and Inside the PGA TOUR. In 2007, the Mayor of Winston-Salem proclaimed June 11 as Samuel G. Puryear Jr. Day in recognition of his contributions to golf and the community. He also served as a consultant for the film From the Rough and is the author of Diamonds in the Rough, an inspirational account of faith and perseverance. While his professional accomplishments span more than 25 years, Puryear considers his greatest joys to be his family: his four children, two grandchildren, and his wife, LaRita Aubespin.
